This Fire

Dear Paula Cole,  I have done some research, and I believe I may have some answers for you.

Cowboys, as you know, were traditionally hired in the 1800s to help move herds of cattle across the vast plains of the central United States. A cowboy would generally work for a ranch and, when needed, he would ride along as the livestock were moved from place to place, usually for the purpose of an auction or market of some sort.

By the 1890s, however, our great nation was crisscrossed with a network of railroads, making the transportation of livestock infinitely quicker and more efficient. Naturally, this method required far fewer men. Ranch employees would load the cattle onto the trains and auction employees would lead them off. The advent of this new method of transportation rendered traditional cowboys obsolete, therefore driving them to find employment in other fields.

Now stop singing that stupid fucking song.
